Inside the 700 square metre space we've built out in Othmarschen Park, somewhere between the twelve axe lanes and the shuffleboards, sits our nail game: Hammer Smash. Each player takes a swing at their own nail, driving it further into a wooden stump with every turn, and the first one to sink it flush takes the round. There's no technique to master, just timing and a bit of composure while everyone else is watching your swing. It suits the urban forest atmosphere we've built here, where axe throwing, beer pong, shuffleboard and craft beer already share the same room. Colleagues finishing a Hamburg workday, families with older kids trying something new, or a group settling in before a Sunday tournament all drift toward the stump at some point in the evening. No instructions required beyond the first swing, and the crowd gathered around usually explains the rest.

Across our Hamburg lanes, Hammer Smash tends to appear at two points in the evening: right at the start, while the group is still settling in with their first round of drinks, or later on, once the axe throwing is done and there's still energy left in the room.
